If we could only lose weight without joining a gym or changing our eating habits, life would be much easier… Some enthusiasts argue that the proper application of the magnetic field might be it.
Even in ancient countries (China, Egypt, Greece), people believed that magnets had the power to restore the natural balance of the body system and were used for healing purposes.
In recent years, it has been found that the exposure to the static electric field, at sufficiently high levels and duration, can lead to different biological effects including sensory stimulation of hair and skin, headache amelioration, foot pain, inflammation, decrease in oxidative stress and even improvement of hemodynamic perturbations in atherosclerotic coronary arteries.
But can the application of magnetic devices or wearing magnetic bracelets and rings help us lose weight?
At a cellular level, it is proposed that magnetic field application can increase blood flow and oxygen levels, resulting in improvement of cellular respiration which is the process of breaking down macronutrients, like carbohydrates and fat, into useable forms of energy. Those alternative weight management enthusiasts claim the south pole of a magnet can slow down metabolism and the north pole stimulates it. Placing the north pole of the magnet at the throat base (where the thyroid gland is) or at other acupressure-relevant points of the body (fingers, toes), can stimulate metabolism on the cellular level and help us, therefore, burn more calories and lose weight.
Some clinical trials did show that acupuncture itself might have beneficial effects on weight loss when used as a complementary and alternative approach. However, there is no evidence whatsoever that small magnetic devices work for weight loss or weight maintenance, even though there are some people who swear by this miracle, The best explanation for these results would be a simple placebo effect. Our brain and beliefs can be a powerful force, even when it comes to weight management!
